Being a barista from a big city such as Melbourne a city of roughly 4 million inhabitants the move to Linz a small city of around two hundred thousand was a big change. There are the obvious differences when you make a new country your home the language the culture the food and of course the Coffee!
Coffee culture in Austria is heavily steeped in tradition and the ways of old. Viennese style coffee houses with their tendency to favour darker roasts and milky, creamy coffee infused beverages, are historic tourist attractions boasting impressive architecture and amazing sweet treats with some still even allowing their guests to enjoy their coffee and strudel with an accompanying cigarette.
Melbourne is a little different the coffee scene is not so bound by tradition and freer to experiment with many alternative flavour profiles.
